Panzhihua University, founded in 1983, is a public comprehensive undergraduate institution located in Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, a region renowned for its vanadium‑titanium resources, abundant sunshine, and role as a national health and tourist city. Over several decades, the university has developed through important reforms and mergers, including the integration of Panzhihua Education College and Panzhihua Health School, which helped it form a solid foundation in education, health, and applied sciences before being upgraded to an undergraduate‑level institution in 2001. Today, it is the only comprehensive undergraduate university serving southwest Sichuan and northwest Yunnan, with a clear focus on application‑oriented education and regional development.
Within this history, the School of Medicine has a particularly long tradition. Its predecessor, Panzhihua Health School, was founded in December 1972 as “Sichuan Dukou Health School”, merged into Panzhihua University in 1998 as the Medical Department, and was officially renamed the School of Medicine in 2006. The School of Medicine now offers one undergraduate specialty in Clinical Medicine and three junior college specialties (Clinical Medicine, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Optometry & Ophthalmology Technology), supported by modern teaching and experimental facilities, 30 clinical teaching hospitals, and two research platforms: Panzhihua Medical Research Center and Panzhihua Institute of Ethnic‑Minority Medicine.
Panzhihua University and its School of Medicine emphasize cultivating practical and socially responsible professionals through close integration of teaching, research, and industry. The School of Medicine maintains high passing rates in the National Medical Licensing Examination, strong postgraduate admission outcomes, and an employment rate above 97%, while actively participating in the Belt and Road initiative by enrolling international students—especially from Pakistan—and strengthening cooperation with medical universities in Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and leading institutions within China. Together, the university and its medical school have become important bases for practical talent training, medical education internationalization, and technological innovation in western China.
